Dr. Chalumuri Ravi Sekhar, Director, CSIR-Central Road Research Institute
Dr. Chalumuri Ravi Sekhar, Director of CSIR–Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), is a distinguished transportation engineering professional with over two decades of experience spanning research, consultancy, academic mentorship, and institutional leadership. Over the years, he has played a pivotal role in strengthening CRRI’s contributions to national transport policy, infrastructure planning, and technology-driven innovation, aligning the Institute’s research agenda with India’s evolving mobility and sustainability priorities.
Dr. Ravi Sekhar obtained his Doctoral degree in Transportation Engineering from Kobe University, Japan (2008), where his research focused on measuring travel time reliability of road transportation systems, supported by advanced exposure to Intelligent Transportation Systems. He earned his Master of Engineering in Transportation Engineering from IIT Roorkee (1999) and his B.Tech in Civil Engineering from JNTU Hyderabad. His academic and professional expertise encompasses traffic engineering, transportation planning, travel demand modelling, travel time reliability, route and mode choice analysis, ITS, GIS/GPS applications, highway geometric design, and the application of artificial intelligence and soft computing techniques, including Artificial Neural Networks, to transportation and road safety challenges.
Dr. Ravi Sekhar has led and contributed to more than 40 major R&D, sponsored, and consultancy projects, many with direct policy relevance and field implementation. His notable contributions include leadership in the development of the Trip Generation Manual for Indian Cities, AI-based Automatic Vehicle Counting and Classification software, evaluation of Bus Rapid Transit systems, preparation of Comprehensive Mobility Plans for Indian cities, and advanced studies on road safety using ADAS and DMS technologies, electric vehicle infrastructure, and environmental impacts of traffic.
An accomplished academic and mentor, Dr. Ravi Sekhar has authored over 100 research publications in reputed national and international journals and conferences, in addition to books and book chapters. He has successfully guided 27 M.Tech dissertations and six Ph.D. scholars, and regularly teaches advanced courses at the Academy of Scientific and Industrial Research (AcSIR). His contributions have been widely recognized through prestigious honours, including the IRC Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Centenary Award, CIDC Achievement Award, and the CSIR-CRRI Best Scientist Award, reflecting his sustained impact on transportation engineering research, policy, and practice.
