Specifications

  • Rigid loading frame with a maximum load capacity of 100 kN
  • Soil tank designed to accommodate prepared test beds
  • Can be used for soils and other geomaterials, including industrial waste load carrying capacity
  • Hydraulic jack system for controlled application of vertical load
  • Load cell for accurate measurement of applied load
  • Linear Variable Displacement Transducers (LVDTs) for precise measurement of surface settlement
  • Stable reaction arrangement to ensure uniform load transfer
Working Principle

The static plate load test is conducted in accordance with ASTM D1196, in which incremental vertical loads are applied to a rigid plate placed on the surface of the prepared soil. The load is applied using a hydraulic jack and transferred through a rigid loading frame, while the resulting surface settlements are measured using LVDTs. The applied load and corresponding settlements are recorded continuously to generate load-settlement curves, which are used to evaluate the load-bearing capacity, stiffness, and deformation characteristics of unbound soils and ground-improved systems under static loading conditions.

Applications

The facility is used to determine the load-bearing capacity of unbound soils and to evaluate the settlement and stiffness characteristics of foundation materials. It supports performance assessment of ground improvement techniques and enables comparative studies of treated and untreated soil beds. The setup is also suitable for model-scale investigations related to shallow foundations, pavements, and embankment bases, aiding reliable geotechnical design. User Instructions

  • Prepare soil or ground-improved layers to the target density and moisture content
  • Specify plate size, target load levels, and loading sequence prior to testing
  • Ensure proper levelling and seating of the loading plate
  • Allow sufficient time for settlement stabilization at each load increment
